Good Movies?

These days, theres a real lack of talent in Hollywood. Aside from the known legends, I’m not really seeing anyone that is fit to carry over the torch. There are a few notables, like Seth Rogen or Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Mclovin from ‘Superbad’) but I really couldn’t imagine those guys ever doing any type of movie outside of comedy. Seth Rogen, is a really funny guy, but if I ever saw him in a horror movie I’d probably end up laughing from thinking of something from one of his other movies. Mclovin is probably going to be playing nerd roles for a long time, but I think he might be able to get away with something else.

But I really can’t tell what the real problem is. Is there a lack of talent in the movie industry, or is it a lack of quality movies? I consider myself an avid movie goer, and I always end up leaving a movie thinking “man that movie sucked” or “that movie was alright…i guess.” When I’m paying 10 dollars to watch a movie at the theater, I really shouldn’t be settling for “alright.” When I was younger I would leave the movie theater with my friends going “Whoa, that movie was sick” or “I liked it, but I doubt I’ll ever watch it again.”

In the end, I can only count on new movies with established actors like Will Smith in “7 Pounds” or Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro in “Righteous Kill.” In fact, now I find myself going through the discount movie bin in Walmart to see what 5 dollar gems they have to offer; and they actually have quite a good selection. I was able to get great movies like “I Am Sam,” “Catch Me If You Can,” “Out Of Time” and plenty other classics. (You might even call it a collection) I’m just wondering what happened to the directors that made movies like “The Big Lebowski,” “Man On Fire,” or “Romeo Must Die.” I know theres a recession going on, but I don’t think the quality of movies should be effected by it.

Too Much Homework

I’m currently in my 4th semester of Radio Broadcasting at Seneca College and I find it ridiculous that teachers are willing to overload students with homework without the slightest bit of consideration to the other classes that they have. It’s like a good amount of the teachers think that students are only enrolled in their class or something. They decide to give you more assignments then you can count, and expect you to complete them on time without accepting excuses.

Students in my program have about 8 classes every semester, so you can imagine how many assignments we end up with at the end of the semester. The majority of us students are procrastinators, and take pride in doing impressive assignments at the last minute possible. Teachers need to realize that we aren’t spending 4 hours a day reading their textbooks or 1 hour a day studying for their exams. Most of us do our assignments the day before their due, and cram at the last minute to remember as much information as we can for exams.

Aside from my great online teacher this semester (Ms. Agnew), all my online teachers were real jerks. I’m not going to name any names, but every other online teacher was too strict with late assignments. One teacher would subtract 25% every late day and my 2 other online teachers would not accept late assignments at all. I think its outrageous how some teachers expect students to have no lives; its like we’re supposed to be robots whose only purpose is to do work and graduate. They forget that we have leisure activities, jobs, and other priorities to deal with in our everyday lives.

Some of my regular teachers give up to 12 assignments for us to complete, which is way too much in any students opinion. Although, some teachers give us till the end of the semester to complete, its still way too much work to give. All in all, teachers should focus more on the assignments they give in class instead of loading students up with homework that they do last minute and with half the effort.

The Raptors Are Hopeless

I don’t know about you, but I’m just about fed up with hoping that the Raptors are going to be a contending team. Every season they end up being a bust, and I hear that they are going to be better NEXT season. Brian Collangelo has been filling us with false hope with his experimental strategies for a while now and I’m really close to giving up on the Craptors. I wouldn’t say that I’m a die hard fan of the Raptors, but I’ve supported the team for a long time and I watch games whenever I get the chance.

We had an amazing team some years back, when we were still being coached by Butch Carter, Lenny Wilkins or Isiah Thomas. Of course back then we still had “Air Canada” Vince Carter. Back when our team had Vince Carter, Morris Peterson, Alvin Williams and Antonio Davis, We really had a team to be proud of; a team you would be proud to call the Toronto Raptors. Now, our team is fighting for last place in our division with the Washington Wizards.

Some how, Raptors management managed to get rid of all our good players and replace them with relative no namers. The biggest Raptors slip up had to be when our rookie General Manager Rob Babcock, actually traded Vince Carter (our franchise player) for Aaron and Eric Williams, (who we dropped soon after) Alonzo Mourning, (who refused to play for our team and ended up retiring) and a 10th round draft pick that ended up being Joey Graham. I dunno about you, but I think that might be the worst trade in NBA History.

Obviously, after that trade we needed to rebuild but I don’t like the direction we went in. Instead of tweaking like most teams would do, we decide to go in a completely other direction and change our team to the European league. I’ll admit it looked successful at first, we even made it to the playoffs; mainly with the help of Chris Bosh. But look now, we’re seeded in the 20s with a point guard (Jose Calderon) that might be a masochist with the amount of injuries he gets.

I feel that we need to drop Collangelo and get a conservative thinking GM. Our team really isn’t that bad, so its a real mystery why they’re doing worse than so many bad teams. Maybe our coach Jay Treano is to blame? Well, I hope they can figure it out because we need to get something started again.
